Ford announced recently that they will begin offering the 2014 F-150 pickup with a CNG/LPG (compressed natural gas/liquefied petroleum gas) option. This will mark the first half-ton pickup available with this less expensive more efficient alternative to gasoline. While many models of CNG/LPG powered vehicles have been a mainstay in other countries, much like other alternate fuel choices, it will probably take some time for consumers to warm up to it. This innovation alone will provides an affordable and efficient alternative to gasoline, but rumor has it that Ford is hiding another ace up their sleeve.
What is Ford’s game changer?
Although it has just been a rumor for years, Ford will be building its 2015 F-Series trucks with body panels composed of large amounts of aluminum. Aluminum reduces overall weight, which can help increase fuel economy. Before you start worrying your next new truck will be as rugged as a soft drink can, the frame and other structural components will still be made of steel. The slimmed down models would not be hitting showrooms until late 2014, as the changeover to aluminum panels is just in the beginning stages. While aluminum is a lighter alternative than steel and a less expensive choice than composites like carbon fiber, it does require more finesse to repair, which would require the auto body repair industry to step up their processes as well.
F-150 is built for performance
Gasoline prices will most likely never shift down to where they were just a few years ago. The CNG powered aluminum body pickup stands to save consumers the most money. The price of CNG is currently averaging 40-60% less than regular gasoline and a full tank can provide a range of up to 750 miles in the lighter weight F-150. The addition of smart stop technology will also help further improve on fuel usage in stop and go city driving. The aluminum body panels also help to improve the F-150’s handling and acceleration. One financial analyst from Fool.com predicts the shift to aluminum could shave up to 700 pounds, or 15% of its total weight.
While these new versions of the F-150 are still working toward production, Sames Ford has a great selection of fuel-efficient EcoBoost powered F-150s. The 2014 Ford F-150 will be available with an engine capable of running on compressed natural gas. Though other U.S. manufacturers offer the CNG option for some of their trucks, Ford will be the only producer in the half-ton pickup market. This CNG/LPG engine offers a huge discount at the pumps during a difficult economic time.
The Compressed Natural Gas Difference
The national average of a gallon of regular gasoline is roughly $3.55, depending on where you live. The savings are huge when you compare the two fuels. Compressed natural gas sells for an average of $2.11 per gasoline-gallon equivalent. The difference of $1.50 for each gallon is the start of serious savings for your wallet.
The CNG/LPG engine package will be able to run over 750 miles on a single tank of gas. The Ford F-150 will average 23 mpg on the highway, which means some serious travel time between fill-ups. Mileage per tank varies depending on the size of tank that is put on the truck. While these trucks offer huge savings on fuel, they face a barrier to entry in mass appeal.
Natural gas refueling stations can’t be found every few blocks like a standard gasoline stations. Companies can afford to house their own natural gas pumps to accommodate company vehicles, but individuals don’t have that option. There are 1,235 CNG fueling stations in the United States, but only 596 are available to the public, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
If you are excited to get your hands on one of these F-150 trucks the good news is you won’t have to wait long. Ford will be launching these 2014 models this fall. If you are eager to find a new truck or don’t have a fueling station nearby, we can help you out.

The 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid is performance at its finest. The Fusion’s Hybrid 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine puts 188 horsepower to the ground and offers an impressive 47 mpg in the city. The 2013 Fusion leaves consumers wondering what they love the most – the sleek design or the fuel efficiency.
The Fusion Hybrid Craze
The Fusion Hybrid is so popular that the production plants are running at 114% capacity and still struggling to meet the demand. “Our newest hybrids are contributing to Ford’s growth and share gains, while bringing new customers into the showroom in nontraditional hybrid markets,” said Jim Farley, Ford Motor Company’s executive vice president of global marketing. Ford was the only member of the big three U.S. automakers to not take a government bailout, and is still doing very well. Q2 sales were up 517% from 2012 in Ford’s hybrid category alone. The excitement of the 2013 Fusion Hybrid comes from its strong performance, high safety rating and all-around reliability and its “not-so-hybrid looking” design.
The Awards Ceremony
To date the Ford Fusion Hybrid has racked up some impressive awards including:
“2013 Best Hybrid Car for the Money” and the “2013 Best Hybrid Car for Families” – U.S. News & World Report
“Best Redesigned Vehicle of the Year” – Kelley Blue Book
“Green Car of the Year” – The Los Angeles Auto Show
“Best Car for the Money” – US News
The Ford Fusion is outselling every other Ford vehicle in 2013, with the exception of the No.1 selling vehicle in the U.S. the F-series pickup truck. In the first half of 2013, Ford has four vehicles in the top 15 in terms of U.S. sales. Those vehicles are the Fusion, Escape, F-Series pickup truck, and Focus.
