Ford Contributes $1 Million Donation to Help Build Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture

Ford has announced that the company will donate $1 million to help build the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, which is devoted to exploring and documenting American history through an African American lens. The museum, scheduled to open in 2016, is currently under construction on a five-acre site adjacent to the Washington monument.

Ford’s donation extends the 40 year relationship that the company has with the Smithsonian which includes more than $11.5 dollars to support exhibits and programs.

“We are so pleased that the Ford Motor Company Fund has chosen to join hundreds of donors from across the country to build a groundswell of support for the National Museum of African American History and Culture; we recognize this as a vote of confidence,” said Lonnie G. Bunch III, founding director of the museum. “It is a genuine honor to have the company join us in our commitment to bring to the nation’s capital a truly innovative cultural resource – one capable of telling a richer and fuller story of the development of this country.”

Ford’s “Ketchy” Collaboration

Ford Motor Company and H.J. Heinz Company have been “ketching-up” a lot lately. Although the collaboration might seem unlikely, the two companies are working together on an innovative way to put tomato byproducts to good use for both companies.

Researchers are in the early stages of examining ways that tomato fibers can be used to develop a more sustainable bio-plastic for vehicle wiring baskets and storage bins. For example, in the future, the plastic storage compartments that hold your coins could be made from dried tomato skins.

“We are exploring whether this food processing byproduct makes sense for an automotive application,” said Ellen Lee, plastics research technical specialist for Ford. “Our goal is to develop a strong, lightweight material that meets our vehicle requirements, while at the same time reducing our overall environmental impact.”

While the collaboration falls in line with Ford’s global sustainability strategy, it would also help Heinz repurpose and recycle the peels, stems and seeds from the more than two million tons of tomatoes they use annually.

Ford is Painting Some Firsts

The all-new Ford Transit will make its North American debut later this summer and will don industry-first paint technology that improves paint durability and sustainability. The technology, which is now in use at the Ford Kansas City Assembly Plant, improves conventional paint methods in a number of ways including using less energy and water throughout the painting procedure. Ford Mustang Goes to Space. Yes, Outer Space.

Ford enthusiasts are celebrating the Mustang’s 50^th anniversary yet again. Earlier this year, the Mustang celebrated its big anniversary at the top of the Empire State Building, but this month the Mustang was taken to new heights, literally.

Michael Sego, a Ford zone sales manager, and Steve Kubitz, managing partner of a San Francisco area Ford dealership, recently videoed a Mustang leaving the earth’s atmosphere. The duo and their friends suspended a Revell Mustang model kit (you didn’t think it was a full size Mustang, did you?!) below a high-altitude weather balloon along with a few small action cameras to document the event.

“We wanted to celebrate 50 years of Mustang and the impending arrival of the all-new 2015 Mustang by doing something really special,” said Sego. “Mustang has always been about getting behind the wheel and hitting the open road, but we decided to take to the open sky.”

The Mustang took about 74 minutes to reach a height of nearly 21 miles and then descended back down to earth.

Empire State of Mustangs

About 50 years ago, Ford cut its brand new Mustang convertible into three pieces, sent it up the Empire State Building’s elevator, reassembled the vehicle and drove it around the observation deck. Half a century later, Ford did the same thing with the 2015 Mustang, all in order to commemorate the Mustang’s 50th anniversary.

But a lot has changed since 1965. With a bigger, longer and wider vehicle, and the exact same Empire State Building, Ford enlisted the help of DST Industries and actually built an Empire State Building elevator replica to carefully plan and test out the process ahead of time. With an elevator only 36-inches wide, careful planning was definitely in order. Check out some of the neat then and now photos.

Ford Warriors in Pink

Social for good is what it’s all about, and when that good is for the fight against breast cancer, everyone wants to be social. That’s why Ford has established the Ford Warriors in Pink.

Ford Warriors in Pink was established to create hope and awareness for the cause and to encourage all of those affected by breast cancer. The organization supports the fight against breast cancer through their line of apparel, sponsorships, and Courage Talks. All of this has raised over $125 million for the effort. The organization has been established since 1993, and in 2006 Ford made a mission to become more involved in the fight.

Ford now offers “warrior wear,” where 100% of the net proceeds are donated to the charity of the buyer’s choice. Furthermore, Ford sponsors events from Komen Race for the Cure to endorsements in television, magazines and movies. You can also find the Courage Talks with their Courage Models on the Ford website. In this segment, Courage Models (breast cancer survivors) tell their stories and encourage others to keep up the fight. These models include men and women from the age of 18, all the way up to the age of 70 and from all stages of life.
